Drop fiber cables are widely used in single-core and dual-core structures, and can also be manufactured in four-core configurations. Their cross-section is figure-8 shaped, with reinforcement members located at the centers of the two circles. These reinforcements can be made of metal or non-metal materials, while the optical fibers are positioned at the geometric center of the figure-8 shape. The optical fibers in drop cables use G.657 small bending radius fibers, allowing installation with a 200mm bending radius suitable for conduits or exposed wiring inside buildings. The unique figure-8 structure of drop fiber cables enables on-site termination in the shortest possible time. Currently, various field connectors manufactured by Corning, 3M, and Fujikura are compatible with standard-sized 2.0mm×3.1mm drop fiber cables and are widely used worldwide.
Based on the type of reinforcement, drop fiber cables can be classified into metal-reinforced and non-metal reinforced types. Metal-reinforced drop fiber cables can achieve greater tensile strength, making them suitable for long-distance indoor horizontal wiring or short-distance indoor vertical wiring. Unlike traditional phosphated steel wire reinforcement, metal-reinforced drop fiber cables use special copper-clad steel wire materials, which prevent the rebound and coiling damage that phosphated steel wires can cause during engineering construction. Non-metal reinforced drop fiber cables use FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) as the reinforcement material, enabling fully non-metallic fiber-to-the-home installations with excellent lightning protection performance, suitable for indoor introductions.
The outer sheath of drop fiber cables is typically made of PVC material or LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) material. LSZH material offers higher flame retardancy than PVC material. Additionally, black LSZH material can resist UV erosion and prevent cracking, making it suitable for outdoor-to-indoor installations.
